We’ve been fast out the traps this year! The second beer release of 2018! We’ve done a collaboration with The Gilbert Street Hotel in Adelaide to celebrate the Hottest 100. It's their first collaboration and they were up here recently helping us brew a refreshing Watermelon Gose. It’s got a solid wheat malt base and the Watermelon flavour is coming through really nicely with some coriander giving it a bit of depth, it’s 5.6% and so there’s a bit to it. We’ve named it Twisted Melons and it will be pouring at some very limited spots. The Gilbert naturally but here’s the list.

We'll be throwing a Hottest 100 Party on Saturday 27th where both new beers will be pouring. Definitely not one to be missed as we'll be shouting the bar if we get placed in the top 10 of the GABS Hottest 100.

To celebrate the Gilbert's first Collab beer & the Hottest 100, they'll be throwing a cracker of a party! Carpark Cricket is a go-er! As well as a BBQ & Smoker. It looks like a hot one in SA and so what better way to catch the GABS announcement and listen to the Triple J Hottest 100!

The Welcome Hotel, @TheWelcomeHotel  Balmain NSW

We're doing a Sumo sized 7 tap takeover at the Welcome on Saturday 27th. There'll be a sumo suit challenge, ping pong tournament and both our new beers - Twisted Melons & Sunstroke - pouring. Plus the same rule applies as Modus HQ, if we get a beer placed in the top 10 of the  GABS Hottest 100 we'll be shouting the bar middy of our Session IPA. So if you can't make it up to see us at Modus, get down to The Welcome.

In the name of supporting Australian businesses, they'll be pouring a decent selection from Australian owned breweries, including Modus. There'll be free pies during the top 10 countdown and smoked Aussie snags made in house. All this while they record the latest episode of Sessionable.

Sunstroke Double IPA

Here we go! 2018 is up and running! We’re kicking things off as we left off - Introducing Sunstroke DIPA. Our latest unfiltered Double IPA. Brewed especially for Hopquest 2.0, where it will be in the mix with some of Australia’s best hop forward breweries. Come along this Friday 26th to Beer Deluxe Fed Square, Melbourne @beerdeluxefedsquare to be one of the first to try it. 


Sunstroke is a summer DIPA with some serious stone fruit aroma and tropical flavour and pine finish. It’s a big beer at 8.6% but you’ll be reaching for it on a hot summer’s day and it will do the trick. 


From Saturday 27th January there will be some very select venues pouring the new beer. 

We'll of course be pouring it at Modus HQ. We're throwing a Hottest 100 Celebration and while looking back at 2017 we're cracking on with 2018! We're super excited to share this very limited run with our loyal locals and get involved. But the GABS Hottest 100 will be watched as we listen to the Triple J Countdown, every time one of our beers is placed on the GABS ladder, we'll be shouting the bar. Can't get better than that!

We're turning THREE!

This Saturday (22nd July) we are gearing up for one hell of a party and we wanna party with you - the folks that have made this all possible! The brew crew have been working their butts off to deliver THREE special release beers for THREE special years.. and they have outdone themselves. Here we go...

Beer 1 | Black Lab Milk Stout

No doubt at some point when you have walked though the gates of Modus you would have been greeted by our much loved brewery dog, Stout. He will ensure you reach the bar safely and then is on hand when you can’t fit that last chip in. What most people don’t know is that he celebrates his birthday with Modus and in fact, is the same age. He of course deserves a beer named after him... and believe it or not it's the only Modus beer he will drink! 

Black Lab Milk Stout paws with a thick brown head and envelopes the snout in decadent chocolate aromas. Smoother than a labradors coat due to the lactose sugar, it rolls over tantalising aromas of chocolate, dry biscuit and roast from the addition of eight malty treats. This lavish brew will have you cocking your leg on your neighbours letterbox in “no” time. 

This is our next Limited Edition can release and is exclusively available from the brewery this Saturday with it hitting stockists next week (stockists will be revealed tomorrow night on Facebook and Instagram). 

Beer 2 | Yeast Coast IPA

Wheaty Brewing Corps, Fixation & Modus have done a few versions of this beer brewed at Wheaty in Adelaide, but this time we have brewed it at Modus and have put it into Limited Edition cans, with a fancy collaboration label. This IPA was brewed with oats, torrified wheat, Amarillo, Citra, El Dorado and Simcoe hops, resulting in a soft, layered and fruity brew. A true homage to yeast and great brewery mates!

This beer will be on tap and available for takeaway exclusively from this Saturday. There will be some kegs floating around good bars/pubs in the coming weeks. Cans however will only be available from the brewery OR if you are in Adelaide this Sunday (23rd July) you can grab these cans at the Wheaty as well as some great IPA’s on tap from Wheaty, Fixation & Modus!

Beer 3 | Triple Deity IPA

You know we love our IPA's, so of course we needed another one just for our birthday. And this one is the s$%t - there is 1.5kg of dry hop in each keg of this beer!! Brewed with raw barley and torrified wheat, hopped with only the most expensive hops and $100 bills on a level only justifiable because its our birthday. This beer is bursting with tropical fruit and pineapple aromas.  Supremely soft and perpetually crushable, its the ultimate birthday juice.

We will have a whole bunch of CANimals filled for ya on Saturday so after you have had a few birthday pints you can go home and enjoy in peace. Its ones of those beers that you wanna do this with. Exclusively available at the brewery and very select bars/pubs.

Three new beers. Live tunes by Volky from 5pm. DJ Reece hittin the decks from 8pm. Best 80's Run DMC costume wins huge cake of Modus tins. A sick side show game with prizes. Limited edition 3rd birthday tee. Finger lickin grub. Epic Party. Full-stop. 



The Year That Was 2016

What? Its nearly the end of 2016! When did that bloody happen. Its at this time of the year one is allowed to reflect - so reflect we shall. 

Modus Cans

From the get go, we always knew we wanted to put our beer into cans. We started out first year of operation with the CANimal machine (the big 946mL cans which are filled straight of the tap and then seamed with a bar top seamer), which was a great way of achieving our dream without the big outlay costs of a canning line. Early 2016 though - we were ready to put all our savings into our dream - a real grown up canning line. So in January, we headed on down to the brewery basement. Oh yes, as you can see from the image below, we had some work ahead of us.

With the addition of a lift, coolroom, slick floors, a super charged chiller, two new bright tanks, a canning line and a labeller... all done in 3 months... she now looks like this. Click through to check out some more pics. 

With our new shiny canning system in place, we were then able to get out some CANS! We are bloody proud of our brew team (Dennis, Kizza & Brett) for creating this amazing line up this year (see below). Their dedication to the brew is beyond outstanding. A true testament to our motto - Beer First. No Shortcuts. Thanks legends!

2016 Awards

We were stoked to pick up the following awards this year! 

+ AIBA (Australian International Beer Awards) - Best International Pale Ale (Modus Pale), Gold: Former Tenant Red IPA, Gold for Can Design. 

+ Australian Craft Beer Awards - Gold: Modus Pale Ale, Silent Knight Porter, Silver: Sonic Prayer IPA, Zoo Feeder IPA, Former Tenant Red IPA. 

+ Royal Adelaide Beer & Cider Awards - Champion Medium Brewery, Gold: Modus Pale Ale, Former Tenant Red IPA, Silver - Silent Knight Porter.

+ Not awards, but nice pats on the back: "Best New Brewer" - Rate Beer, "Top 10 NSW beers of 2016" - Crafty Pint, Former Tenant gets 9th in Aussie Hottest 100 beers (before it went into cans!).

We love our home! It was very important for us to have a laid back "cellar door" for people to come and not just experience our fresh beer and finger lickin grub, but to get a feel for our personality and see what we really get up to. Having our 2nd birthday this year, we felt incredibly lucky and very humbled that we have become part of the local community. Thank you folks for having us and for loving our beer as much as we do! We look forward to having you back in 2017 for more fresh beer, awesome local live music, a new menu and of course just some good ol' times with your mates, family and strangers!

Of course there have been many more happenings in 2016, but I have tried to not harp on and keep it brief, so you can get back to your beer! A final mention to our amazing team. When we first opened, we opened with 4 full time staff (including Grant & I) and today we have 20. There is absolutely no way we would be where we are without them. A big thank you guys - thank you for joining us on this pretty cool journey!

And last, but not least, our awesome appreciators - you are what drives us to make the best beer possible. Thank you for letting us into your pint glasses and fridges. Have a bloody good Christmas and we will see you in 20-17 for another year of exciting happenings.
